ART ON SEA

Yesterday (August 11th) saw the launch of Art On Sea, a floating art gallery devised by the White Horses project (as part of the Canterbury Festival). My linocut "Rescue 3" was one of 11 artworks blown up to around 5 metres and printed on to dinghy sails and launched for the first time from Whitstable Yacht Club. Have a look at my dedicated Art On Sea page and visit the White Horses site for more information on the sails and the project.

I've been very busy over the last couple of months, preparing prints for a few interesting projects.  I have a set of hand printed postcards appearing in the opening exhibition of the Contains Art exhibition in Watchet, Somerset; my new print "My Underwater Love" (pictured here) will be appearing in a poetry anthology produced by the lovely Poems Underwater crew and I have another print being reproduced on a dinghy sail as part of the White Horses project. More information on each of these soon.

I was really pleased recently to be asked by the folks at Forum Cafe Bars to produce a bunch of mining-related prints for the newly refurbished Crown and Anchor in Barugh Green near Barnsley, frequented by a number of ex-miners. The place looks lovely, have a look at their website.

I've been working with a great musician over the last few weeks on the cover for his forthcoming debut album.  Dan Turnbull aka "Funke and the Two Tone Baby" is a one man mechanical alt-blues machine, playing live all over the country this summer to support the release of Battles. Head over to his Facebook profile, follow him on Twitter and buy his CD here.

I thought I'd just take a moment to express my gratitude to the lovely folks at the Rhondda Cynon Taff library service in Aberdare who have allowed me to plunder their brilliant photographic archive for source material for my prints.  Have a look at this great resource.

THE BLACK GOLD PRESS

Welcome to the Black Gold Press.  I am a printmaker based in Broadstairs in Kent, but my heritage lies in South Wales.  My grandfather was a coal miner in the Rhondda - an area of Wales that used to power the world - and the name for my site derives from a term often used to describe coal.  Much of my work is devoted to  mining but I am more broadly inspired by the industry, tradition and eccentricity of the British Isles and beyond.  I hope you enjoy my work. Cheers, Ieuan.
